A Syllabus Example for Teaching B2-Level Idioms in Teaching Turkish as a Foreign Language

Abstract

In this study, the idioms in the B2-level textbooks of Ankara University TOMER Yeni Hitit 2, Turkish for Foreigners; Gazi University TOMER, Istanbul DILMER Turkish for Foreigners, and Yunus Emre Institute Yedi Iklim Turkish, which are commonly used for teaching Turkish as a foreign language, were selected as samples by random sampling method according to expert opinion. This study aims to develop a new and original syllabus for teaching B2-level idioms. Qualitative research method such as observation, expert opinion, document review was used in the study. Document analysis is one of the qualitative research patterns by which written materials (books, magazines, newspapers, e-content documents) are reviewed (Yildirim & Simsek, 2013). In the study, the data based on the literature was examined and a specific syllabus was developed based on the meaning and usage in language teaching by detecting the deficiencies in the field according to the expert opinion, which is one of the intuitive methods. With this aspect of the study, it is thought that the study can set an example for language teachers and material development specialists who will develop course materials for the target audience. The study also aimed to create an example syllabus for teaching idioms in the reviewed textbooks in the light of the “Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Within the framework of this aim, a syllabus for teaching idioms was developed by taking into consideration the B2-level qualifications of Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Hacivat-Karagoz, one of the verbal cultural elements of Turkish culture, was used in creation of this syllabus. It is thought that the study will be helpful to language teachers in developing different and original syllabi in the field of teaching Turkish to foreigners.
